You probably do not connect the Algarve with freshwater aquatic animals, but they are here! Apart from the daphnia, the only animal we have added to the lake is a species of fish found in local rivers which we had it in our fountain already and know it is very hardy. A large number of other aquatic animals have found the lake by themselves. In the first months there were quite a lot of mosquito larvae, but the fish and carnivorous insects have taken car of that - for more than a month we have not seen any. When we had a few days of rain, the local toads woke up, found the water and filled it with eggs, it is at the moment home to thousands of tadpoles. They seem to like the shallow part best, and do not mind the lukewarm water. We just wonder where they all will go when they leave the water. In addition to this we have:  - various species of dragonflies and damselflies, we have seen at least 4 different over the lake, and also larvae in the water. The larvae are eating a lot of different animals, including tadpoles and small fish.  - backswimmers (Notonecta glauca), which are insects that spend most their time some distance under the surface - Whirligig beetles is often found swimming in small groups on the surface.
